I live in Eastwood in Nottingham the birth place of D H Lawrence, I have lived in and around this area for many years and knew that he came from here but never ever thought his books would interest me.
Last Saturday we went for a walk and ended up at his birthplace museum (the old terraced house he was born in). Not only did seeing gas lights, the black leaded range and an old tin bath take me back to my childhood and my gran, but also the tour guide was so engaging that I learnt a lot and became very interested.
I did not know that Lawrence had also written poetry and before leaving I bought his complete works of poetry and Sons and Lovers to read.
I have been pleasantly surprised and am working my way bit by bit through his poems and am engrossed in his book.
Just goes to show we don't always take notice of things on our own doorsteps.
